I consider myself pretty adventurous when it comes to food. I think most people have hang-ups when it comes to trying another food group from a different culture. I admit I used to be like that, just stuck to the “normal” staples like American food, Chinese, Mexican, and Italian. Now that I’m a little bit older I find myself appreciating other food more, which led me here to King Tut. It’s an Egyptian food restaurant here in Fort Worth. Very small, and I believe they used to have a different location to the one I visited. Either way, I have never tried Egyptian food and didn’t know what to expect. I had seen some people talk about it online a couple of times so I figured why not, let’s check it out.

I went on a weekday about an hour before it closed, so it was pretty dead inside. Just me, my friend, and another party of 5 or so. The place isn’t very large by any means. I think calling it a hole in the wall isn’t disingenuous, and I’ve always thought of that saying as a term of endearment anyway. We were immediately greeted by the nicest waitress who was friendly and talkative the entire time, and not in a way that seems fake for the eventual tip. We told her it was our first time having this kind of food and she gladly went over some stuff with us and gave recommendations.
This place starts you off with a salad before any of the food comes out, which is always appreciated. For appetizers we got sambosas, which I had heard of before. I think some places call them samosas or sambusas, whatever the case may be, they were good. We tried one with veggies and one with meat. They were small, but again they were appetizers so we didn’t mind as they were yummy. For our main entrees we ordered Mossaca and the Kafta. My Kafta was essentially these small steaks of lamb with a side of dipping sauce. While the Mossaca was almost like a casserole of meat and eggplant with a side of rice. Both of our food was great, very flavorful and really large portions. We had leftovers the next day.

The inside was also really cool. Decorations consisting of Egyptian artwork and small statues of Pharaohs and sphynx. I think these are the types of places that we need to support more often. You get unique flavors that you can’t find anywhere else. Because do we really need another McDonald’s or Chic-fil-A around? I encourage all of you guys to try this spot, step out of your comfort zone and get a taste of Egypt here at King Tut.
